What kind of chocolate should I use to make chocolate covered pretzels? Is it best to buy baking chocolate or can I use Hershey’s chocolate bars etc? Also, do you have any suggestions for festive designs for Christmas? I would like to make and decorate them for Xmas gifts.

You can just melt down semi-sweet chocolate morsels (they’re in the baking section of your store). Use 2 sauce pans (1 big enough to nest the smaller one in side of it). Put water in the bigger pan and the chocolate chips in the smaller one. Heat just hot enough to keep the water simmering and melt the chocolate. You can put some canning wax in with the chocolate too. The wax isn’t necessary, but your finished product will set up harder and shinier. For Christmas gifts consider drizzling the chocolate covered pretzels with white chocolate, chopped nuts, or chopped of bits of toffee (like from a heath or skor bar). Pretty much anything will stick as long as you apply it before the chocolate hardens. Consider the individual you’re making the pretzels for and add ingredients you know they like.
dark choc
I use a mix of chocolate almond bark (just a bit) and chocolate chips. You can use either regular chocolate chips or milk chocolate. I use a mixture of the two. I melt mine in a regular sauce pan over medium to low heat stirring constantly. I then move to where I have the pretzels out and ready to go along with plenty of wax paper that I let the pretzels dry on. I put a handful into the pan at a time and bring them out with a fork. If you want to decorate you can put sprinkles on while the chocolate is still wet. Even better wait until the chocolate sets, melt some white chocolate chips and drizzle that over the chocolate pretzels for a pretty presentation. Try also dipping large rod pretzels half way into the chocolate than rolling in crushed peppermint candies.
Use chocolate bark or even chocolate chips that have been melted.
gemmyt took my answer. Go with hers, pretend it was mine, and go ahead and let me have the best answer points. (She wont mind, I asked)

Almond Bark is either Dark or white.it is the best .
To decorate after dipping in chocolate.
lay on one side and sprinkle decorating candies on them. use wax paper to lay the pretzels on..
let the chocolate harden .
dip into dark then after they harden , dip into white chocolate . just the edges then sprinkle candies on..
or use a small spoon to dribble the chocolate on the pretzels.
use your creativity
Just use chocolate bark, I like the white chocolate bark to make them.
For decorating and packaging as gifts, you will get the best result from almond bark. You can use chocolate chips, but they are more likely to get melty and not hold the decoration as well. You can find almond bark near the baking chocolate, it looks just like bricks of chocolate and comes in a variety of flavors and colors. It’s easy to work with and tastes great. There are package directions for melting and storing.
For Pretzels:
1. dip in melted milk or dark chocolate almond bark and let cool on wax paper. Drizzle white chocolate almond bark over to make stripes. Or reverse colors.
2. dip half in milk or dark chocolate allow to cool then the other half in white chocolate for a half and half
3. Dip in white chocolate, allow to cool. Add red food coloring gel to remaining white chocolate and drizzle over pretzels for a candy cane look
4. Dip Ritz bits (mini peanut butter sandwiches) for a yummy treat
5. Tuxedo Crackers…very fancy, but labor intensive…spread peanut butter between 2 ritz crackers, dip in white chocolate, cool. Dip lower edge in dark chocolate at an angle, from both sides to form a V. cool again. use a toothpick and make 3 dark dots on the white part, and a "bow tie" at the top of the white part.
